Instagram is one of the biggest social media platforms, having surpassed 800 million users it is second to the mighty Facebook.

One of the apps most notable features is its Instagram Stories; since launching back in 2016, 250 million Instagram users have started sharing content on Instagram stories, contributing to a huge jump in amount of time people spend on the app every day from 24 minutes to 32.

With this huge increase in popularity, Instagram stories have proven to be an effective tool for brands and celebrities alike. The temporary content is only available for 24 hours and so taps into the millennial FOMO (fear of missing out) mentality and also provides a platform for fun, throw-away pieces of content that wont’t ruin a brand’s Instagram page aesthetic.

However, since the start of the year, Instagram’s archive feature means that your best Instagram stories can now live on your profile forever, a great way to introduce your brand / service to new customers.

So, how can you give your Instagram stories the wow factor?

1. Boomerang it!

Instagram Stories has some great tools to create interesting and engaging content, we like the boomerang, rewind and slow-motion tools; as they give instant impact. Here’s how to use them effectively…

  • Utilise the rewind tool when showcasing fun and interesting content to give a standard video a little more flare.
  • Use the boomerang tool by writing a sentence and letting the boomerang reverse it as if it was un-writing it.
  • The slow-motion tool can create emphasis on certain angles to again make the video more engaging.

These can all be found on the bottom of the screen when selecting the camera. You can scroll along on the main landing page where all options are displayed.

1. GIFs and stickers

Get creative with stickers and gifs on pictures and videos, it’s one of the simplest ways to liven up your content.

On the top right corner of the screen is three options. If you click the one on the left of a smiley face, this will bring up some great options of stickers pre-loaded on Instagram. You can then scroll through the options there and find one that suits. For a quicker method, you can use the search bar. The stickers can then be placed on the screen and enlarged/rotated so you can create the look you’re after.

The sticker option has a huge range of features that can be added onto the photo/video such as a poll, location stamp or emoji slider. If you are looking to ask your audience a question to gauge their opinions, a poll about your product/service would be a great way to increase awareness and develop your customer research. The emoji slider is quite similar to this where you rely on the public’s repose to a question you have asked. You can then customise the slider with your chosen emoji to make it more unique. These features are great for making the viewers feel more influential towards your brand.

Another way to give you more creative freedom instead of using Instagram’s own images is by simply copying gifs and stickers from Google and then pasting them anywhere on the screen.

3. Colourful Copy

Use Your brand’s colours

Make your Instagram story look more professional by using your brand colours…

Use the eye dropper tool on the story keyboard to do this. Simply tap the pen icon or the “Aa” icon in the top right-hand corner to open the brush or text tool. A colour pallet will appear of default colours to use on your text. You will see an eye dropper icon on the far left of the pallet. Hold your finger down on the screen and move the colour dropper over the image to select the colour pixel for your content. When you’re satisfied with the choice, release your finger and begin your text.

Rainbow Text

Who doesn’t love a rainbow? An eye-catching way to make your stories stand out is to use rainbow text and it’s really easy, but it does involve some finger gymnastics!

  1. Write your text
  2. Select All text
  3. Hold your right thumb on the right hand side of the colour palette
  4. Then put your left thumb on the text cursor
  5. Slide both fingers at the same time to the left
  6. Your letters will change colour – making an ombre / rainbow effect.

4. Keyboard symbols

A feature that many people won’t think to use is the symbols on your keyboard, just like text, symbols can be magnified, rotated and add colour.

Tap the “Aa” icon in the right hand corner just like you would to add normal text. Then using your keyboard, select symbols and select the one that you feel would look good on your story. To change the size of the symbol, you can either use the slider bar on the left or by pinching/pulling with two fingers. You can also change the colour of the symbols to make the design more eye-catching.

5. Music Maestro

A great trick to making your videos on your story more exciting is the feature that was recently introduced to Instagram allowing you to mute your background video noise and attach a song of your choice. This can be a great way of making your content more entertaining and with the right music, it can make your viewers more invested.

To do this, simply select the song of your choice from your chosen music playing platform (i.e. Spotify, Apple Music etc) and then open Instagram stories and record your video. This will sync up your music with the video that is captured. Once you have finished recording, an option on the top right of your screen will appear of a music icon. This allows you to mute the noise from the video so your content is merged with the song you were playing.

Now, go and have fun with your Instagram stories and check for new features regularly to make sure that your brand is ahead of the curve. For more help with your social media content please get in touch with the Cunning Plan team, we’d love to hear from you.
